Levocarnitine is a white or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals. It is freely soluble in water, soluble in warm ethanol (96 per cent), practically insoluble in acetone.
As a new type of nutritional enhancer, especially as an additive of infant formula food, athlete food and weight loss and bodybuilding food, L-carnitine has been widely used in functional food.
1. In infant formula
L-carnitine plays an important role in the metabolic process of infants using fat as the energy source. Due to the weak biosynthesis ability of L-carnitine in infants, it cannot meet the needs of normal metabolism. Therefore, it is necessary to ingest exogenous L-carnitine to ensure that the body fat is in the best oxidation state and provide enough energy to maintain the normal body temperature of infants. In addition, L-carnitine can promote the growth and development of infants and improve the metabolic balance.
2. In athletes' food
L-carnitine can promote fat oxidation in the body, provide sufficient energy for the body, and improve the endurance and explosive power of exercise. The commonly used method is to add L-carnitine to the beverage of athletes for strengthening.
3. In weight loss and bodybuilding food
L-carnitine fortified food has a good effect on the disorder of fat metabolism caused by carnitine deficiency, and can prevent obesity, fatty liver and other diseases caused by the accumulation of lipid substances in muscle fibers and liver.
