Glycine occurs as a white, crystalline powder. One gram dissolves in about 4 mL of water. It is very slightly soluble in alcohol and in ether. Its solution is acid to litmus.
Glycine is mainly used as a nutritional supplement for chicken feed. It is used in medicine for the treatment of myasthenia gravis and progressive muscle atrophy, hyperacidity, chronic enteritis, and children with hyperproline.
