Description
Phenobarbital is a white or almost white, crystalline powder or colourless crystals. It is very slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent). It forms water-soluble compounds with alkali hydroxides, carbonates and ammonia.
Application
Phenobarbital has a sedative effect and is suitable for anxiety, irritability, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, functional nausea, and pyloric palsy in children. It also has anticonvulsant effect, and is often used for anticonvulsant central poisoning or high fever, tetanus, encephalitis, cerebral hemorrhage and other diseases caused by convulsions. It is also used in the treatment of epileptic seizures and partial seizures.
